The Nets and NBA Economics
Yesterday, Grantland.com posted a story by Malcolm Gladwell on the economic saga behind the new arena being built in Brooklyn and the sale of the New Jersey Nets, which will move to Brooklyn in 2012. I know some people do not share the same enthusiasm for sports that I have, but this story is absolutely worth a read whether you follow sports or not. I think the nature of this deal speaks to some of the economic and moral issues we face as a country presently.
I was also very intrigued by the role of government using “eminent domain” to greenlight a project like this; my alma mater recently used eminent domain on nearby houses in order to erect more dormitories and academic buildings, and I’m honestly not sure I’m on board with the idea, being that it’s a private university.
Give this a read today.
